Structure

When you have finished the body of the letter (motivation - argumentation - extra assets), add an introduction and a conclusion. Avoid standard formulation.

Also add in the necessary administrative elements (sender, recipient, etc. )

Style

Reread your letter for style.

  • Is it fluent, brief and to the point?
  • Is it positive and confident without being arrogant?
  • Is it personal without desperately trying to be original?

Perspective

  • Is your letter not too self-centred?
  • Does it relate to the original ad?
  • Does your letter highlight what you might offer to an employer?

Adjust your letter if necessary.

Formal conventions

  • Is your letter fully blocked?
  • Does it include a subject line?
  • Have you used the appropriate opening and closing salutation?

Also check whether your letter conforms to BIN norms (Belgisch Instituut voor Normalisatie) which formulates strict rules concerning blank lines, commas, the position of the sender's address etc.
