Referral

The referral letter is an effective type of cover letter that often results from networking. Somebody tells you about a vacancy somewhere and you apply for that job.

In the introduction of that letter, you will mention the person who gave you the information about the vacancy. He or she may have given you inside information that you can use to make your application stand out. Later on in the letter you ask for an invitation to an interview.

In most cases, a limited amount of people will be aware of the vacancy, which increases your chances of success.
